Alma, Thursday, March 9, 2023 – The research and innovation center COlab – Social Innovation and Digital Culture unveiled this morning its new laboratory: a volumetric capture studio, an emerging and promising technology. Composed of a five-meter diameter dome, the studio is equipped with 75 4K cameras and 70 lighting panels. Thanks to artificial intelligence, this technology can transform a human in motion into an animated 3D model.

This laboratory, representing an investment of nearly one million dollars, will be dedicated to research and innovation, particularly for research projects and proofs of concept, but also for businesses and organizations interested in exploring new possibilities with volumetric capture.

3D REALISM

The greatest added value of volumetric capture lies in the realism of the final product. To achieve this, only one step is needed: video capture, which is then automatically converted into animated 3D through an artificial intelligence algorithm. This technology significantly reduces the number of steps typically required in 3D animation, such as modeling, motion capture, and post-production animation, to name just a few. Depending on the nature of the project, a single day of capture may suffice, followed by 24 to 72 hours for the 3D reconstruction. The final images, intended for immersive reality, can then be integrated into virtual reality headsets.

This new technology offers several possibilities, particularly in training contexts—for example, to demonstrate a manipulation or execution technique, or to simulate a procedure or movement. Many other applications of this technology deserve exploration in a variety of fields such as sports, tourism, culture, and more.

AN EMERGING TECHNOLOGY

For several years, Collège d’Alma has encouraged its teacher-researchers to work on the potential of immersive reality in education and pedagogy. This new studio aligns with the shared vision of Collège d’Alma and COlab to explore the full potential of this emerging technology. With this new volumetric capture studio, COlab becomes the very first research center in Canada to possess this technology!
